Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for your support. Despite the mediocre collections, we received accolades from critics and fans alike! We are still scratching our heads as to why so few people watched, and though the director has various reasons of his own, we cannot be at all sure why a film - which the viewers thought was at the very least entertaining, and at the very best, the director's best work - could do so little to stir the box office economy. especially one that everyone seemed to love so much. We had hoped that excitement, good opinion and word of mouth would help the film like any other film, but it doesn't seem so.

The bad thing is, we don't seem to know what the audience wants anymore. What they say is good doesn't seem to translate financially. So there is no real certainty as to what the audience want, and that bodes ill for the future of our industry.

However, I have a hunch that those who loved it, loved it very much and may even have seen it again, and for that, we are truly appreciative and love you all so much!!

We had a fabulous time on the set and in the lead up to the cinematic release, and wouldn't trade the experience for any other. Please keep an ey on this blog to find out more about upcoming releases to do with the film.

Meantime, have a happy new year, happy chinese new year and ponggal!

Hi Everyone!

I know it has been a long time but we are finally at the stage where we can honestly say, we see the end of the tunnel!

We have completed dubbing and are finishing off audio and scoring.

Next step: Final Audio Post / Mastering then on to Censorship.

Once we get approval, we go on to printing. Meanwhile, we nicely nicely ask Wajib Tayang for a date for cinematic release. Our target is sometime after mid year - probably around Raya, but no promises yet, as it all depends on WT.

So when we go to Final Audio Post, this will see the Director, Wizard SoundMeister and Assistant Producer going to Bangkok for Final Mix at Siam Lab - keep you posted on that one!

Stick around because we will be starting a little mini-competition that will be judged by vote, and the voters are YOU!

Approaching Final Cut...

Tonight, dear readers (if there are still any), the Director, Ass Prod (yours truly) and Vision Works reps will be attending the first preview of the as-yet-unfinished edit of Los Dan Faun.

Tonight, at last, after the flurry of activity for THAT OTHER MOVIE has nearly reached an end, we will finally have a chane to see L&F in a rough storyline!!

We foresee that dubbing will begin first with Stephen Rahman Hughes in late April due to his schedule, after which we shall continue with the rest of the cast much later.

We are hoping for a Raya release for this film, which promises to be a whole lotta fun!

hiatus almost over

Hi Everyone!

I see the site is still being visited and I'm posting to let you know that though we have been on a bit of a break, we are gearing up to start the editing process.

Award-winning Cinequip, headed by Abang Din, will be editing Los Dan Faun and at the helm will be Faizul. Both he and Abang Din edited Buli and Buli Balik and we trust them to do a swell job again!

I am a little hazy on the details, but basically they have to take the footage, which has already been transferred from the processed film onto digibeta SP tape along with a keycode. With this keycode, the editors can sort out the good takes form the bad. Using the script and the continuity sheets passed on to them by our lovely Second AD, Shima, they can start sorting out which bits of footage ("takes") make up the first, second, third scenes and so on.

Once they get a rough cut together, fine-tuning with the Director ensues. Then there's the addition of computer graphics and visual effects, music, sound effects and dubbing, credit titles... some really heavy orchestration of various elements which will combine to make a super-successful whole!

it's (almost) a wrap!

We had one more day of shoot on 29th May for the helicopter shots (oh yes!) but unfortunately could finish the shots before sunset, so we will be continuing with one more day of the heli shoot on Friday 2nd June. The heli pilot was an amazing pilot who got some fantastic shots of the house, a moving car and loads of other delicious visuals you will only see in the movie (why is 2007 so far away?!)

But, since we had limited time to have a wrap party before everyone went off to new projects, and because of the Actorlympics show schedule, we planned for our wrap party on Tuesday 30th May at Rahsia Bistro on Jalan Damai.

We began with a lovely dinner in the gorgeous ambience and setting of the bungalow restaurant in the heart of Damai in the city, then moved on to T-Shirt presentation for all the cast and crew, then ended the night with a karaoke session which had a prize of one handphone, courtesy of Motorola.

Afdlin and Stephen warmed up the crowd with their own songs before the competition started.

In the end, after four of our brave crew took turns singing their hearts out, the judges (Hans Isaac, Stephen Rahman and Douglas Lim) asked to view the state of their handphones for the final judging (yes, our judging criteria are dubious, but hey, it was our night!)

Finally, through talent and sheer determination, Jerry, our hair stylist, took home the phone. Then, as an added and lovely surprise, we were told to look under our seats for dinner vouchers courtesy of Rahsia - thanks, guys, for a lovely evening and delicious dinner!

So, although some of us are still shooting this Friday, it was a wonderful way to cap off the six weeks of production!

One of the best things about production is finding those lovely moments during all the work and the crap and the tedium when everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves.

We had A.C on the set today and as usual had something to do with the fun factor going up a few notches. Earlier in the day he had a swimming pool scene which I am willing to bet will have audiences rolling in the aisles (and you'll have to watch the movie to see for yourself!)

Our shoot is coming to an end after a rather tough last week. We've had to drop scenes for logistical reasons, some for other, more mystical reasons (like our graveside scene). Our last day will involve a complicated helicopter and stunt sequence. Then, after a bit of a break, it will be on to post-production with the editing and dubbing and after that, further treatment for the final cut.

But don't worry, we will continue to have information and updates, and keep you up to speed about the hows and whys of making Los Dan Faun!

communication breakdown

Well, it was bound to surface and it has - a glitch in the system which has been causing some tension on the set. Although all of us are all too aware of what kind of problems there can be on the set of a film production, we tend to get on with our own work without realising there's trouble brewing. We may even assume someone is taking care of it if we happen to think of a potential problem.

The crux of the problem:communication: the act of speaking, imparting relevant information for the purpose of clarification. Well, there's been lots of speaking and imparting of information, but unfortunately the achievement of clarification was not successful, which resulted in frustration and time wasted.

Still, thanks to the piping up of earnest voices, the problem was highlighted and, though momentarily tense, clarification was achieved! However, since I left the set soon after in the early hours of the morning, I am not sure if it was all put into practise immediately.

But, another late night tonight signals the urgency of having clear lines of communication so that we finish our work efficiently and purposefully.

Thanks to all the crew and cast for all their patience and determination in getting the job done. Five days to go!

All you bloggers out htere who made it to the set on Saturday, I hope you had loads of fun! Anne PRAP will surely be posting photos of the day soon. I'd like to thank you also for your support of our blog, it helps to know people are reading what you're posting!

While we eagerly await Anne's piccies, I shall update some of my own shots of what has happened since the last post.

During the day of Tuan Dir's birthday we shared cake amongst the crew and cast before continuing with the rest of the short day of shoot.

Saturday we filmed a street scene where Los and Dick do a drive by on a busy road.

This is where our bloggers got a chance to be extras in the street and also to be screamed at by O our First AD. Man, has he got lungs!

The traffic situation got a little heavy, but with Frank our Prod Man and Bob our Ass Prod Man, it was quickly under control.

Later that day we filmed the outside of the water tank scene - whose interior was featured a couple of blogs ago. Here is the tank before and after we turned off the daylight!

Tommy, whose photo I finally got, is this chap right here.

And now we see Los and Faun as they emerge from the water tank after soaking for a few hours.

This is a picture of Genny. She's on the left there. She keeps us going when we get low on energy, but boy, does she blow a lot of smoke!

Genny is a film production's mainstay, the necessary generator we need to operate, away from power plugs and with lights, camera, monitors, recorders, computers, printers and batteries to keep on, lit and charged. Though since the petrol price hikes, we've been a little sore at Genny! She takes up to RM500 worth of petrol over a period of a couple of days.

Then Sunday was a well-deserved day of rest and today we'll be back at the rich Soffar's house shooting the final scene.

Yippie... the shoot went all the way till 2:30am last nite.. and right before "O" wrap it up, the crew did an "impromptu" suprise birthday celebration for Mr Afdlin Shauki, with an "instant" cake and cup cakes and a BIG not-suppose-to-be a birthday candle.. and not forgetting a "whispering" birthday song (coz the family in the house tht we're shooting is sleeping at the mo).. here are some of the pics!

Heyya!

Regarding the Los Dan Faun Set Visit, I will close the invitation this Wednesday, 17th May 2006. There are still few places left, so if you wanna go, just email me yah. We havent decide on the date of the visit yet but it might be on the 20th(Saturday) or 22nd(Monday) May 2006. Again, its not confirmed yet ok, I need to check with the Director and our 1st AD.

Just to share with you the view of a spectacular KL sunset from up above the city. The quality of light is fantastic! For about half an hour the light will remain diffused and warm, which is why filmmakers call this the magic hour. There is no harsh directional light, there is enough light to shoot if you want to shoot without extra lighting for a moodier effect, and there are only 30 minutes to do it in. In some countries, up to an hour and a half.

Films like Days of Heaven and The Thin Blue Line were shot entirely during magic hour (the power of the auteur director over budgets is something our little industry has yet to experience). By the way, an auteur (specifically in the film industry) is a director whose vision drives the movie. More an artist than someone with commercial ideals. So David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick are auteurs. Jerry Bruckheimer and Ron Howard are not, though because they are so commercially viable, the creative power they have over their movies are auteur-like. Most auteurs don't get need or get huge budgets. But these are all generelisations, and of course there are always exceptions.

A few pictures of the machines which the lab we send our exposed reels to, uses to process film. Thanks to Mike, the processor guy at APV, for letting me take them.

At the time, the machines and the lab was being cleaned, so, they were not in action. But, as you can see, it looks complicated. And there are lots of tubes, compartments and places for chemicals and film to go in and out.

Today we were shooting at an empty office floor in a high rise in the middle of the city. It involved stunts and loads of fun. Here, the Director Afdlin choreographs the fight scene with all the actors, who are happy to contribute their own ideas.

The scene involved Khir Rahman as Amran, Stephen Rahman Hughes as Dick, and of course Hans Isaac and Adlin Aman Ramlie as Los and Faun. We also had Erra Fazira, who looked gorgeous as usual.

LDF- Set Visit

hiya!! its me, the PRAP chic.. heehee.. its abt time for me to update something in this blog.. well, am not going to talk about the making of the film here, i leave tht to our dearie Ass Prod.. she knows mucho better about it than me.. I am here to prolly add new piccies and also update you guys out there on the upcoming activity(s) related to LDF.. speaking of which, most of you must have read the "Visit LDF set" thingy from Afdlin's blog.. so am here to explain a bit more on tht matter as i know loads of you are curious abt it..

First and foremost, i know loads of you called the office yesterday to be among the 1st 50 kodoks to get a chance visiting the set.. Unfortunately, i was out the office the whole day organizing a pc and today, the phone line was down at the office.. Am not sure if the phone line is up now tho.. so, me and my dearest Ass Prod were thinking about the whole deal and we think that it would be better if you guys could just email your name and contact no to me and i will let you know via email too if you're among the 1st 50 kodoks.. cuppish? well, it will be much easier this way and i will have a record of your request and your contact too.. plus, i will not be in the office all the time, so its a bit difficult for me to answer your call..

And we have not decided yet on the date of the visit.. it might be towards the end of the shooting which is somewhere at the end of May.. each one of you who manage to go to the site visit will be giving a TAG and will be ushered to the set to see the action behind the camera.. and we will allocate you an ample time for you to snap-snap your camera with the stars on the set that day..

The miracle of framing...

So we have to shoot a scene in a water catchment tank, which looks like this.

How do we do that without forcing the actors into raw untreated water and opening up the potential for complaints from the general public about sanitation?

We mock it up. We take a large portable swimming pool, get a Production Designer and Art Director to make it over and voila! Success! You have already seen pictures of Asraff, our Art Director. Hopefully soon I'll have pictures of Tommy, our Production Designer, for you.

So here we have what it actually looks like, with the camera set up on a crane for a lovely shot.

Then we get our lovely actors to get into the cold water and shiver their way through the scene. In Hollywood, I'm sure they heat the water, but here, well, we're into realism, folks! And there's nothing better to help an actor along than to actually have cold water in which to shiver!

Havin' Fun on The Low Rider

If you ever wondered how they shoot inside a moving car, this is one of the ways it's done. We put the car on what is called a Low Loader, then put the camera in front of it. By manipulating the construction of the shot (i.e. what we see in the frame on screen), we see the road behind the car, but not the back of the low loader itself. Another way to do it is to attach the camera to a rig on the car itself. Yet another way is to have the car stationary and to rock it while shooting the scene, then bluescreen the outside images into the scene, or project a pre-recorded back-window view onto a screen behind the stationary car, then choreograph the actors' and car movements to fit the projected images.

So today we had a scene where Los and Faun, together with Dick Johnson and Amran, are driving along discussing the details of the case they are all investigating together. Straight after, we used the low loader again to record Dick and Los together on Dick's Harley. Despite the fact that Stephen got his lines just before the he got on the bike, the scene was done in one take, kudos! Here we see both Hans Isaac's and Stephen's in-depth preparatory exercises.

And here we have almost all the crew getting close and personal on the bike. As soon as I approach some people with my camera held up, wah! Berposing aje!

A bit more on our crew, but first, a bit more on our shoot.

Last night we were shooting at the Rest Relax Reflex store in Sri Hartamas, where we took over a lovely reflexology place and turned it into mayhem! Thank you to the kind owners for their patience. If you're looking for a nice place to have a great foot massage, that's the place to go. You may eventually recognise the reflexologists while you're having your massage - because they were in the movie giving real massages to the actors while they were shooting the scene.

One such reflexologist had to deliver a couple of lines - and he gave it good! You will see him when the film comes out - he's the one torturing Faun (Adlin Aman Ramlie).

Here Pali (Assistant Cameraman) changes the film magazine (the oval can that holds the roll of film) after the film runs out. Pali is always by DOP Helmi's side, measuring the distance from the subject (actor or object) to the lens to determine the focus. Because the focus of the lens is done manually by someone (Pali) who is not looking through the lens, he has to do it by the numbers.

Here is our equipment van, which is like a mini store. Next to it, our three PA's, Shah, Awang and Syawal.

Here is Frank looking more relaxed as the night goes on, and our Stills Photographer, Darling (which is what we call each other when we don't know each others' names).

After this location, they moved to MOdesto's in Hartamas, where they stayed till 9 this morning. Sleep well, happy campers!

the faces of production

It's funny how a camera changes a person's expression. Check out our First Assistant Director's face before and after he realised I had a camera pointing his way (maybe it was just the hot hot sun). Or it could have been the "don't mess with me" and "good job!" expressions that he needs to practise using on a daily basis.

"O" Khairul Askor was First AD on Baik Punya Cilok and on Buli Balik, and what a gem he is! What does the First AD do? Besides scheduling the whole production, making sure the right artistes are on set on time and calling "Action" on behalf of the Director, our First AD also stands in for missing characters and feeds actors and extras their line cues.

And then there's Frank, our Production Manager. This is basically Frank's expression most of the time. If you can't really see it, it's worried. The only time it's different is if he's swearing he'll kill himself over some location problem - don't worry, it's when he's cracking a laugh! See, he hasn't even noticed all the extras I told you about last time.

What does the Production Manager do? If he doesn't have a location manager, he arranges for the locations, makes sure the permissions are gotten and negotiates any fees. He also handles the money on set and metes out payment (so be nice to him). He has a great Assistant Production Manager, Bob, who is not in any of the pictures. Yet. The Production Manager basically makes sure everything is running smoothly and often has to work ahead of the production to make sure everything will be alright.

And one last face, Actor. This one we hauled out of sunny England to work in the heat and humidity, and here he is chilling with one of our extras suppliers who brought a mix of people to be wealthy characters at an auction house. Say hi to Stephen who arrived last Saturday night and jumped straight into his first day of shoot on Sunday.

So what does an Actor do? Well, besides looking the part, they need to convey to the audience and emotion or idea, and visually too, because acting is not so much about the dialogue but the... acting I guess. People always remember the look in someone's eyes when they're about to lose someone, or get shot, or when they're in love, in the movies.

And finally, I have never seen a bunch of guys pose faster than our fabulous tech team. I suppose always being on the other side of the camera does that to you!

shake your coconuts

Poolside shoot - and even though the weather now in the afternoon is cooler, it was hot as hell at the site this morning. The beautiful cool water beckoned to those of us who thought it would be nice to be out in the sun. The reality is, the heat got the best of us, and before we had started shoot, we were sweating like the metaphoricals.

Here's how you make a tiny kid's pool and a small sunbathing area look like a place in Miami or Mauritius - a crane shot.

First, you lay down track, which are those smooth metal rods you see on the floor. Then you lift a dolly on to it - the big heavy thing with wheels on it. This allows you to smoothly roll up and down the track.

Now, why would you do that? Well, it would only be for fun unless you were mounting your Arriflex on the dolly. The Arriflex is kind of the standard in film cameras, though not the only one.

With the camera mounted, you can then track up and down the tracks to create a smooth left-to-right sensation in your visual image.

But we have up-and-down too! and that is why before we mount the camera on the dolly, we put a crane on it, the long thing, sometimes referred to as the jib arm or jib. Don't know why.

And as you can see, there is space for the camera guy to sit. His name is Helmi and he is the Director of Photography.

As you probably realise, because it's supposed to look like somewhere like Miami or Mauritius, we need extras in bikinis. You might think our crew are having a field day surrounded by such leggy beauties. But trust me, they are all courteous, professional guys who simply have an eye for healthy youth and beautiful lines (and I couldn't agree more with them).

Sorry to say, I didn't get a picture of Stephen, whose flashback scene this is (where we find out how Dick Johnson's life was back when he was with his wife). But pics will come in shortly.

I omitted to mention yesterday that we had the prodigious talents of Rashid Salleh and Douglas Lim on set, who spent most of their free time trying to beat a computer at a football match. No, it wasn't playstation, it was a computer game where they guessed the performance of their players, bet on scores and on and on, then sat back and watched the possible scenario play out. I mean, how un-macho a game can that be? Still, they were mostly excited whenever they came close to beating their microchip.

Before it all goes horribly wrong...

...make sure you have nice people like the guys at the Parkroyal to take care of you. Yes, that was the location of our shoot today, up on the sixth floor where the Parkroyal Grill opens out to a gorgeous verandah overlooking the city and surrounded by high-rises.

During the shoot a sudden gust of wind lifted a piece of camera equipment and took it over the edge. It landed miraculously on the fabulous feature awning/entry roof at the front of the hotel. Unfortunately it being made of glass, it cracked.

Let me assure you all that every precaution was taken with safety, it's just that we didn't foresee that winds could actually lift the equipment up and over the edge!

But with the kind and courteous staff on hand at the Parkroyal, the matter was soon settled, and we are very grateful to Ravin the Duty Manager and his staff.

So, those of you who guessed Sungei Wang, oh, so close. The other clue was about the garden bit - park, garden - you get the picture.

Today we had Khir Rahman begin his first day of shoot along with Stephen. Khir's character is Amran, who plays the Malaysian equivalent to Stephen's Dick Johnson (does that sound weird?)

Funny fact: Both Khir and Stephen starred as the lead male singers in large-scale musical productions in the first few months of 2006. Who'd've thunk they'd be each other's foils in this movie? (Brilliant casting if you ask me)

Time to introduce another character, Dick Johnson.

Stephen Hughes, who will be playing the role of Dick, just flew in this evening from the UK and is starting tomorrow in a restaurant scene, which also includes cameos by Douglas Lim and Rashid Salleh.

Of course, we all remember Stephen from Puteri Gunung Ledang, and welcome him back to Malaysia for what we think will be THE best film made for local distribution!

These were taken at the bra shop 3 days ago, where curious onlookers would stop to watch Edwin Sumun play a bra shop owner in dire straits.

The Director Afdlin Shauki, Second Assistant Director Shima and Actor Adlin Aman Ramlie debate the finer points of relaxing in front of a tv monitor in a public place. Behind the Director is Asraff, our Art Director.

Not only is he bald and beautiful, he can be copper-coiffed, glitter-stylo and peer like a turtle at you from behind those seductive glasses... By the way, he will be in Vision Works' next run of Actorlympics in the first week of June 2006.

Here, Edwin prepares for a take, with the Director of Photography Helmi in the chair behind the camera. Surrounding him are the essential, well-oiled team called the tech crew.

Once a can of film is exposed, it needs to be taken out of the camera and loaded into a can in complete darkness. If the film gets exposed to any light at all, the image on the film would be double-exposed. If we were to develop it, it would probably look like a flash or go very pale from the extra light. So this is our Film Loader, seen here loading film in a light-proof bag. If you have ever seen "Loader" in the credit titles, and wondered what it meant, now you know.

SO if you see a guy putting his hands into a bag and fiddling for about 2 minutes while he unrolls the film from one reel to another, then puts it safely into a can before sealing it tight to make sure no light creeps in through holes... he ain't fiddling, he's got hot property in his hands.

And what good is a Production Assistant who isn't having fun? Smiles all round make a better day! And with a smile like Faiz's nothing can go wrong.

Four Days at the Coli Shop

Today will be Day 3 at the Coli Shop, situated in the heart of KL, where Los and Faun come upon an interesting character and discover their purpose in life!!

We had a guest performer, Edwin Sumun, on set, and he rocked! He plays the coli shop owner with a pressing plumbing problem, if you know what I mean...

So far, the only hiccup in our production was on Sunday when it rained in Sungai Penchala in the morning. They decided to skip the morning shoot and go to the afternoon shoot in town near Dewan Bahasa, at an apartment for which our Production Manager had secured permission. Problem was, the guy who gave the permission omitted to say he had no authority whatsoever.

So when the crew arrived there, they couldn't go in, then some manager came round and said we couldn't shoot, even though we had written permission.

I tell you, if I were the PM, I would have cried and crawled into a hole. Or maybe want to attack somebody. Anyway, that whole day was a write-off and now, we are owing a day's shoot. The decision has been made to ganti with our break day, but still, everyone was on set for at least a half day - not much of a break, is it?

Other than that little setback, we are on track with our other daily shoots.

Day before yesterday we watched the rushes from Malacca and the first few days of KL - and they were brilliant!! I already spotted a few bloopers which would be great to have for a future making of programme.

Kudos to the crew, cast and directro's team for their fantastic effort and attitudes.

Although the daylight is almost gone now, I thought a little hint about the whereabouts of the crew and cast would be a bit of a teaser.

Los and Faun come into town
The first time in the city
Los and Faun look around and frown
Their destination gritty

People, livestock, ice creams, havoc
Seems like a market, which comes as a shock
When they realise the name of the place they have docked
Is of that and of people, and all in one block

Where are they shooting?

PS. Yesterday's answer was the Vision Works office. Creato is our nickname for the little voodoo man on our logo. Please let meknow if the hints are way too cryptic?

Cutting Our Teeth in Celluloid

This is a little production diary about our venture into film producing. Director Afdlin Shauki is helming the project, a film called "Los Dan Faun" and this will be Vision Works' first foray into producing our own film.

I am Ass Prod, the rather beguiling shorthand for Assistant Producer. Basically, since Afdlin is the Producer for the movie, I assist him as best I can. As you can see, there are other contributors, including Dir, short for Director, but as they will be hands-on with production for the next 4 or 5 weeks, their contributions will depend on how well (or badly) everything is going.

A little about the film:

Los (Carlos Rodrigo, played by Hans Isaac) and Faun (Mohd Faun, played by Adlin Aman Ramlie) are two childhood friends who come to KL in search of a living. Los, never lost for words, is smooth, business-minded and always ready to seize the opportunity. Faun, an observant savaunt, just can't seem to find the social graces required to get by in life, though his genius more than makes up for his lack of social skills.

Los suddenly realises that Faun has incredible powers of obervation and is blessed with an uncanny ability to find misplaced object. Always seeing the potential in everything, Los creates a business around Faun's powers and together they become the talk of the town, finding lost items for the distracted.

One day they get a call from filthy rich and recently widowed Jasmine (played by Erra Fazira), who is desperate to locate the whereabouts of her dead husband's extremely valuable and now extremely lost watch, which he was wearing the day he died, but was not on his person when found dead.

Los and Faun go visit Jasmin, where Faun loses all his capabilities as he sets eyes on the beautiful widow. At the same time, the insurance agent from Sotheby's where the watch was bought, has come to Malaysia to investigate the claim. Miami-vice inspired Dick Johnson (played by Stepehn Rahman-Hughes of Hang Tuah fame) is accompanied by his very quiet and observant Malaysian counterpart Amran (as of now, I am uncertain who has been cast, but will update you asap).

As the boys attempt to find answers with the debilitating lack of Faun's abilities, more and more things are not as they seem.

So that's a little aboout the story, what about the production itself?

Well, we began our first day of shoot yesterday in Malacca, which went pretty well except for bad weather which forced the postponement of two scenes to be shot this morning instead. Word from our assistant production manager is that today's shoot is on time and on track.

So if you're in Malacca you might stumble across the production crew!
